Coded staff messages
Some sites want to alert staff without alarming the public. A coded message does exactly that: the words give nothing away — no mention of fire or evacuation — so only trained staff know what they mean. The code phrase itself is chosen and defined by each building; the recordings below are a ready, neutral example set.

When to use it: A calm, neutral evacuation message used when it is preferable not to state the specific cause, to avoid panic.
Security threat — evacuate or shelter
Attention please! A terrorist threat has been detected in the building. Assess your surroundings. If your escape route is safe, leave the building immediately. If danger is nearby and there are no signs of smoke, barricade yourself in a room and wait for help.
When to use it: A run-or-hide message for a direct security threat; broadcast at the decision of the site's security management.
Lockdown, shelter in place and hazardous substances
Five more situations, none of them covered by the messages above — and two pairs that are constantly confused, so the difference is worth stating plainly. A lockdown is for a threat already inside the building: people lock themselves in where they are. Shelter in place is for a threat outside: people simply stay in, keep away from the windows, and nobody locks an office door. The same split applies to a hazardous substance — if it is outside you seal the building and move up, if it is inside you get everyone out.
This wording is our own. It has not been approved or endorsed by any regulator, and it is a starting point rather than a procedure. Before it goes anywhere near your system, have it approved by your site management and checked against local requirements and the advice of your emergency services. For the lockdown message that matters most of all: the sequence it announces must match your site's own plan and the instructions of your local police, and it should use the same terms your drills already use — if your staff train on “secure” rather than “lockdown”, change the word.
One practical difference from the rest of this page: these five have no recordings yet. Lockdown — secure your room
Attention. This is a lockdown. An armed person is in the building. Stay in your room. Lock and barricade the door. Move away from doors and windows. Lights off, phones on silent. If you are in a corridor, enter the nearest room now. Open the door only to the police. Wait for the all-clear.
When to use it: The message this page was missing. Broadcast it to every zone at once — corridors, stairwells, toilets and plant rooms included — and loop it, because people who move rooms mid-message must hear the whole instruction again. Two details are deliberate: the corridor line, because that is where most people are caught undecided, and the door line, because a lockdown fails the moment somebody opens up for a familiar voice. Stand down only on the decision of the police or site security management.
Shelter in place — danger outside the building
Attention please. This is a shelter-in-place instruction. There is a security incident outside the building. Everyone stay inside. Do not leave the building. Move away from the windows, close them and draw the blinds. If you are outside, come in now. Do not gather at the external doors. Wait for the next announcement.
When to use it: For a hazard outside that makes the street more dangerous than the building — a police cordon nearby, disorder on the road, an incident on an adjacent site. Note what it does not say: no locking of rooms, no barricading, no lights off. That is the whole difference from the lockdown message, and mixing the two wastes the minutes you have. The line about the external doors matters in practice: lobbies fill with people watching, which is exactly where they should not be.
Air threat — unmanned aircraft over the site
Attention please. An unmanned aircraft has been reported over the area. Come inside now if you are outdoors. Move to the lower floors, away from windows and glazing. Close the windows and blinds. Do not go outside. Do not approach a drone or its debris, and do not film. Wait for the all-clear.
When to use it: For an unmanned aircraft reported over or near the site. Three actions carry the message: off open ground, down from the upper floors, and away from glass — glazing is the main hazard to occupants indoors. The last line is there because the instinct in this situation is to walk towards the object with a phone raised, which is the one thing nobody should do. Useful for open sites: yards, car parks, terraces, sports grounds and school playgrounds.
Hazardous substance outside — seal the building
Attention please. A hazardous substance has been released outside the building. Come inside now. Close all windows and vents. Switch off the ventilation and air conditioning. Close the external doors. Move to the upper floors, not the basements. If breathing is difficult, cover your nose and mouth with a damp cloth. Stay inside.
When to use it: For a release outside the building — a spill on a nearby road, a plume from an adjacent industrial site. Here the building is the protection, so it is closed up rather than emptied. Ventilation is the line most often forgotten: air handling will pull the outside air straight in unless someone shuts it down, so the message should be paired with a standing instruction for whoever can actually stop the plant. People go up, not down, because many hazardous vapours are heavier than air and collect at low level.
Hazardous substance inside — leave the building
Attention please. A hazardous substance has been found in the building. Leave now by the nearest exit, avoiding the affected area. Cover your nose and mouth with a cloth. Do not use the lifts. Take nothing out with you. Outside, move upwind to the assembly point and stay until medical staff have checked you.
When to use it: The opposite case to the one above, and the reason both belong on the same page: the substance is inside, so the building is the hazard and everyone leaves. “Avoiding the affected area” is what makes this different from an ordinary evacuation — the nearest exit is not the right exit if the route passes the find. “Take nothing out with you” keeps contamination inside the cordon, and the last line stops people driving home before anyone has looked at them. Follow it with the staff assembly message above.
Three of the five hand over to a stand-down in so many words, and the other two simply tell people to wait; either way there is no need to write a new all-clear message: use the all-clear messages above, so people hear the same familiar phrase whatever the incident was. Two things are worth checking before any of this goes live. First, decide who can trigger each message and write it into the plan; a lockdown announced by mistake in a busy building is an incident in itself. Second, test intelligibility with the doors shut. Lockdown and shelter-in-place messages are heard by people sitting in closed rooms, not walking down corridors — and corridor-only loudspeaker coverage, which passes a casual walk-round easily, is exactly where that falls apart.
All clear
Every alarm needs a stand-down — especially a false one. Play the appropriate all-clear once the situation is confirmed safe, either to bring people back in or to signal normal operation.

Two everyday staff messages that keep an incident organised: calling the responsible officer, and sending staff to their assembly points. The wording is generic — adapt the role and place to your site.

Why the voice is female — acoustics, not fashion
The whole set is recorded in a professional female voice, and that is a deliberate, acoustics-led choice. Here is the reasoning.
1. A female voice sits above the low rumble of a building. A male speaking voice has a fundamental of roughly 85–155 Hz; a female voice, roughly 165–255 Hz. The noise from ventilation, chillers and machinery is concentrated at low frequencies and masks the low part of speech first. A higher-pitched voice simply competes less with that rumble for the same frequency band.

2. A higher pitch carries urgency. Guidance from the US National Institute of Standards and Technology on emergency communication in buildings puts it plainly: urgency is conveyed partly by a higher-pitched voice, and while the speaker’s sex matters less than pitch, female voices are usually higher-pitched. Research by Edworthy and Hellier (2003) adds that the wider pitch range of a female voice can signal a wider range of urgency — from a calm test notice to an urgent “leave now.”
3. Voice wakes and moves people better than a tone. In a randomised study published in Pediatric Research (2020), a spoken alarm woke about 87% of sleeping children while a standard tone alarm woke only about 56%. The headline point for any building: a spoken announcement is far more effective than a bare tone — and a female voice is at least as effective as any other.
4. It matches worldwide practice. Female warning voices have been standard in aviation for decades, the recorded voice heard in around 200 airports and stations worldwide is female, and voice-alarm good practice recommends using distinct, contrasting voices for different message types — with a female voice as the primary evacuation voice a common choice.

- Speak calmly and evenly. A steady, unhurried delivery is understood and acted on better than a dramatic one.
- One message, one file. Keep each announcement as its own recording; let the system add any alert tone at the start.
- Loop with a gap. Repeat the message with a few seconds of silence between plays so it stays intelligible.
- Design for the noise. Enough speakers, evenly spaced, with headroom over the background noise — clarity comes from even coverage, not sheer volume.
- Keep language simple. Short, plain sentences and, where you have international visitors, a second-language version after the English.
