Matrix vs. Mixer Amplifier: When Zones Need Different Audio at the Same Time
A common assumption is that you only need a matrix amplifier "when there are a lot of zones." It's wrong — and a quick look at the product lineup proves it in about a minute. Let's pin down where the line between a mixer amplifier and a matrix system really falls, and why it has nothing to do with the number of zones.
Can a mixer amplifier play different music in two rooms at once?
No. A mixer amplifier has a single amplification path: at any given moment, every active zone carries the same signal. You can control each zone's volume and switch it on or off, but you can't change its source. To run different music in different zones simultaneously, you need a matrix amplifier.
The matrix has six zones and the mixer has eight. So how does the matrix scale to 36?
By cascading. The VPA-MRX 6120 itself has six independent amplification channels, while the number of controllable zones is expanded by adding VPA-MRX 636 paging consoles over CAT6 cable — up to 36 zones and up to 1 km of cable run.
Why does the matrix cost more when it delivers less power?
You're not paying for total wattage — you're paying for independence. The VPA-MRX 6120 is six separate 120 W amplifiers with matrix source routing, whereas the VPA-MK 1000Z8 is a single 1000 W path split across zones. These solve different problems; they aren't different "tiers" of the same product.
How do you size the power for a matrix amplifier?
By the most heavily loaded zone, not by the total. Each channel has its own power budget: if one zone needs 150 W, a 120 W channel won't cover it — even when the combined headroom looks more than sufficient. You can work out the per-zone load in the calculator.
Will the amplifier accept an external voice-alarm signal?
Yes, if the model has a priority input. On the VPA-MC series this is a dedicated EMC input; on the VPA-MRX it's an EMC port plus six dry-contact inputs — one per channel — with a hard-wired priority that lets the external signal override background broadcasting whenever it's present.
